The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at www.donotcall.gov. You can register your home or mobile phone on the "do not call" list for free. Your registration will be effective for five years.

Note regarding cell phone numbers: A directory of cell phone numbers is going to be published for all consumers to have access to. This will open doors for solicitors to call cell phones. This will also cost consumers their minutes. The Federal Trade Commission set up a "do not call" list for people to register to not be called. To register a consumer has to call from the number that they do not want to be called.
