"Nevertheless We Persist" Digital Concert
October 04, 2020
This video series program explores justice for women by looking at the ways in which women have been pigeon-holed, stifled and disenfranchised, whether by others or themselves. In Rigoletto, women are viewed as disposable, and in Les Mamelles de Tiresias, a woman’s only freedom is to become a man. Lori Laitman’s recent witty and empowering cycle for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass, "Are Women’ People?”, explores the woman suffrage movement itself. The cycle uses text from Susan B. Anthony speeches, the “Anti-Suffrage” faction, and the 19th Amendment.
The performers include: Caroline Miller, Soprano; Mary Cloud, Mezzo-Soprano; Jeawook Lee, Tenor; Rahim Mandal, Baritone; Emily Morin, Pianist. Three local poets and activists will also be included.
The episodes will air on September 20, October 4, and October 18 and be available to stream through October 23rd.
