50+ Sports Classic (Tentatively Scheduled for 9/17)
September 09, 2017
People Age 50 and Over Go for the Gold at 50+ Sports Classic People across northwest Ohio age 50 and over are preparing to go for the gold in the Area Office on Aging's 50+ Sports Classic. There is a wide range of events from which the participants can choose. Everything from a full range of track and field events, swimming, tennis, volleyball, table tennis, horseshoes, bowling, golf--you name it, they have it. The event starts with an Opening Ceremony in the morning with the singing of the National Anthem, carrying of the torch and lighting of the cauldron. Individual and team athletic events continue for the rest of the day at St. Francis and surrounding athletic facilities. The event is a good mix of those who are interested in just having some fun while getting some exercise and those who are more competitive. The event focuses on the importance of physical fitness later in life and demonstrates that age has nothing to do with being up for a challenge. The attitude of the participants acknowledges they may not be able to perform the way they did when they were in their 20s, but they still enjoy doing the best they can against their peers. Events are divided into the following age brackets: 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; 80-84; 85-90; 90+. In previous years, the event has included everything from a 50 year old slam dunking to a 94 year old running the 100 meter dash. We can learn the lesson that people in Northwest Ohio are shattering myths about aging with their amazing athletic accomplishments. People in their 50s, 60s and beyond wearing gold medals around their necks give all new meaning to the term "The Golden Years."
